HAPPY HOLIDAAAAYS
Holy crap you guys the Christmas T&Bro anthology is finally done, go check it out! I participated as an author because let's face it, my art makes children cry, if you can even call it art. I got super lucky and three of the six scripts I submitted got adapted into comics! VERY NEATO. (Nothing makes me quite as excited as seeing something I wrote get translated into another medium! And also humbled. I love seeing an artist's vision of something I got to help with!)
Christmas Eve dinner with my family was good but took up an exceedingly large portion of my Saturday. I'm sending out people's little books now, with the exceptions of the ones that will be given in person or sent by mail. Whatever you're doin' today, I hope it's a nice day.
Holy crap and Give us a Kiss got done by millionfish I'm so happy! I was afraid no one would like that one-- it was the first I did for the thing.
Edit: I'm disavowing the sixth script I did because it wasn't very interesting but here are the other two that I liked! One almost got made but the artist who'd picked it was very very busy with schoolwork in the end, so she did something else instead. :)
Christmas 1971
P1
[The scene is at Kotetsu's house in Stern Bild; Tomoe is tucking Kaede in in the bedroom.]
[She exits the room and creeps downstairs]
[Kaede, who was pretending to be asleep, opens one eye and follows her mom]
[Kaede stops at the top of the stairs, peeking over the edge of the stairs down into the living room. The Christmas tree has been set up here.]
P2
[Tomoe sets out gifts under the tree that were not there before, and Kaede's eyes widen. She looks surprised, then kind of sad.]
[There is the sound of the door opening and closing]
[Tomoe looks up quickly. She smiles at whoever has arrived, but that person is not in Kaede's view around the corner of the wall.]
Tomoe: Why, hello there. Nice of you to join us tonight.
P3
[Kaede edges closer to see who her mom is talking to and gasp! It's WILD TIGER!]
Kaede: Wild Tiger is here?
[Tomoe and Wild Tiger kiss, and Kaede looks horrified.]
Kaede: Daddy- but daddy wouldn't--!
[Tiny Kaede runs down the stairs, shouting at Wild Tiger and her mom]
Kaede: You can't do that!
P4
[she picks up a coaster off of the coffee table and throws it at Wild Tiger, scowling]
Kaede: Get away from mom!
Wild Tiger: [stammering] B-but, sweetheart, I--
Tomoe: Kaede? What are you doing out of bed?
[Both Tomoe and wild tiger are naturally blushing a lot and kind of nervous, and Kaede starts to get very upset, not quite crying.]
Kaede: It's not fair! It's not fair to Daddy- he's working hard, too!
[Both Tomoe and Kotetsu look confused and surprised, but they shut up]
P5
Kaede: He's working hard so you have to wait for him to come home. You can't lie to him.
[Tomoe and Kotetsu are both touched, though Tomoe looks like she wants to laugh and Kotetsu looks like he's about to go full on daddy-mode. He clears his throat, and dramatically looks away]
Wild Tiger: Y-you're absolutely right.
Kaede: [warily] yeah?
Wild Tiger: Yeah! [he grins at her] I bet your dad would be really happy you're protecting him so much.
P6
Wild Tiger: And don't worry- your mom and I are just old friends, I wouldn't want to hurt your dad's feelings like that.
Tomoe: [seriously dying trying not to laugh here] O-of course, right.
Kaede: [uncertainly] Y-yeah...
Wild Tiger: But shouldn't you be in bed, sweetheart? It's awfully late to be awake on Christmas Eve.
[Kaede thinks about it.]
Kaede: [with a little pout] Only if you promise you're not gonna kiss my mom again. She likes Heroes a lot so, I'm not sure if she'd stop you.
Tomoe: [LAUGHING] Kaede!
P7
Wild Tiger: [he lifts both hands in surrender] I promise that from now on, only your dad will kiss your mom. Okay?
Kaede: [sagacious nod] Okay.
[She turns to go back upstairs, and hesitates a moment, glancing back at them. They look conspicuously like they're totally not going to start kissing again soon.]
Kaede: ...good night, Mister Wild Tiger. Goodnight, mommy.
[they both smile]
Tomoe: Goodnight, honey. I'll be upstairs again to tuck you in if you want.
[Kaede shakes her head]
Wild Tiger: Goodnight, little miss.
[Kaede disappears up the hall and into her bedroom.]
P8 (or maybe tiny bonus chibi panels at bottom of P7, whichever works)
[Tomoe turns to Kotetsu, smirking]
Tomoe: Only her dad gets to kiss me, hmm? So no more roleplay in the bedroom?
Kotetsu: [whining] B-but I promised Kaede, honey-!
A matter of business
P1:
[Christmas 1959; Maverick's house; there is some manner of dinner party going on here. Several well-dressed adults are seated around the table sipping wine and discussing their affairs in low tones with each other. Notably, one of these adults is Dapper Jake of the Past.]
Jake: I still don't feel exactly comfortable with this invitation, Al.
[Maverick smiles politely at Jake, but doesn't seem to like him very much.]
Maverick: I assume you wouldn't, no.
Jake: I'm just saying, [he starts to pick at his fingernails lazily] nobody can really trust a guy like you, can they?
Maverick: Ah, and yet a man capable of reading minds is guaranteed to be a bit more suspicious of most people than the average businessman, don't you think?
Jake: [raising his voice] I'm not the one keeping secrets!
P2:
[the talk around the table stills and silences]
Maverick: [with a slight smile] Whatever could you possibly mean, Mister Martinez? Who here is keeping secrets?
[Jake scoffs, but doesn't answer, drinking deeply of his wine instead]
[Another of the nicely dressed folk at the table speaks up:] There has been some concern amongst our chairmen regarding the Pepsi account. Do you have time to discuss on thursday, perhaps?
Maverick: [politely] Absolutely. Can I pencil you in for an appointment at four?
[tiny Barnaby wanders into the room in his pajamas, looking pretty sleepy]
Barnaby: Uncle Maverick? [he rubs at his eyes]
[Again, the conversation goes dead. Maverick gets up from his chair with a stern look]
Maverick: You're supposed to be in bed, aren't you?
P3:
[Barnaby seems to notice all the eyes on him and shyly backs away from the table, clutching at the hem of his shirt with both hands]
Barnaby: I- I had a nightmare.
[Maverick's expression doesn't soften, but Jake looks up at him, seeming startled]
Maverick: Shall I get you a cup of milk and take you back to bed, then?
[Barnaby nods, still too shy to look up and meet the eyes of all those strangers]
Maverick: [he turns back to his guests] My apologies. If you'll excuse me for a few minutes.
[He leads Barnaby into the kitchen and pours milk into a pan, then turns on the stove top.]
[Barnaby waits behind him, patiently clutching his hands together, head bowed.]
[They stand in silence while they wait for the milk to warm.]
P4:
[Pouring the now-warm milk back into a mug, Maverick carries it to Barnaby, handing it slowly and carefully to Barnaby with an encouraging smile.]
Maverick: There we go. Have a sip. Is it warm enough?
[Barnaby takes a sip and smiles, nodding.] Mm-hm!
Maverick: That's good. Drink it up, and I'll carry you back to bed.
[Maverick's expression softens.]
Maverick: What kind of nightmare were you having?
Barnaby: [he hesitates mid sip, looking very sad and lonely] I couldn't find you, or mom or dad, or even Aunt Samantha. [he shivers] It was really scary!
[Maverick pats Barnaby's shoulder]
Maverick: You're safe here with me, Barnaby. Don't worry; I won't let you get lost.
[Barnaby nods, looking very reassured, and drinks the rest of the milk.]
P5:
[Maverick carries a sleepy Barnaby back to what appears to be a guest bedroom especially prepared for Barnaby to live in for now.]
[He tucks him in, and pats his shoulder, kneeling beside his bed with a genuine smile. He's uncharacteristically soft here.]
Barnaby: Goodnight, uncle Maverick.
Maverick: [Smiling] Rest well.
p6:
[When he returns, the conversation starts up again as if it were not disturbed, but Jake just watches Maverick closely, grinning ear to ear.]
[When Maverick pays him any attention, Jake just taps his temples and laughs. He leans in close to whisper to Maverick,]
Jake: You're a little sick, you know that?
[Maverick's expression gets hard and cold and Jake backs off.]
Jake: Whoa, whoa--
Maverick: If you can keep focus for long enough to be of any use to us, Mister Martinez, then please keep to business matters while dining wih us. Yes?
Jake: [frowning, he still looks a little disturbed] Yeah, fine.
Maverick: Good. Now, in that case, [Maverick smiles at the assorted folks around the table] how shall we handle the matter of this year's Christmas special? Have you had an opportunity to prepare any events, Mister wilson?
[one of the guests stands up, smiling cheerfully and raising his glass]: Ah, yes. A serial killer, if you think it will do well with the show; we have an operative willing to take the fall and serve a temporary sentence. He's quite good at silencing people, and could take out a few more publicly to build up excitement before the capture on New Year's...
[Jake is frowning, clearly not liking the plan, while Maverick seems generally unphased, smiling slightly]
P7:
[Abruptly, Jake gets up, putting his hat back on and bowing mockingly to the assembled]
Jake: Pardon me. I'm gonna have a smoke.
[He goes out to the balcony, where he lights up and stares out over Stern Bild with a fierce scowl.]
[and oddly, tiny Barnaby shows up there, standing behind him and looking nervously up at him.]
[With a tired sigh, Jake looks back at tiny Barnaby.]
Jake: Stop it.
Barnaby: [he jumps, nervously backing away] Wh-wha-?
Jake: Just calm down. [he puffs on his cigarette, and exhales dramatically into the sky, making a smoke ring.]
[Barnaby goes all wide-eyed at that, staring at the smoke ring]
Jake: [chuckling] Pretty cool, huh?
[Barnaby nods shyly]
Barnaby: Why are you here?
P8:
Jake: [considers it, then crouches down with a huge grin, way too close]
[Barnaby startles, backing up into the wall in fear]
Jake: [he breathes another smokering, careful not to breathe it in Barnaby's face] 'Cause just like you, I'm a NEXT, an' your Uncle has some ideas about work I can do.
Barnaby: [he brightens] You're going to be a Hero?
Jake: [he laughs, hard] HAH! Me? No, I don't think so. I ain't all sunshine and bright eyes like you, kid.
Barnaby: [slight frown] What do you mean?
Jake: [his eyes narrow, and then he shakes his head] Don't think about it too much, kid.
[Standing again, Jake adjusts his hat]
p9:
Jake: Come on. Get back to bed. Your Uncle'll get worried.
[Barnaby nods, and scurries off; Jake scoffs in disgust, leaning against the balcony wall and looking out over the city again, cigarette hanging from his lip.]
Jake: What a pathetic old creep...
Christmas Eve dinner with my family was good but took up an exceedingly large portion of my Saturday. I'm sending out people's little books now, with the exceptions of the ones that will be given in person or sent by mail. Whatever you're doin' today, I hope it's a nice day.
