a day

So, today:

1. D&D

D&D was awesome. We had a great time, and everybody was really fun and funny. Trevor brought a pal who watched and was like AU Skye, from the reality where Skye has epic mutton-chop sideburns instead of long hair. It was awesome. I'm looking forward to writing Fletcher's summary about it.

2. Party for Tony

I was not going to go to this, but I decided to accompany Dustin at the last minute because he felt bad about probably only going for a short while. I figured I'd accompany him since we both have to be up early tomorrow, and thus he would not be the only one leaving at the time he left.

Pros: It's nice to see Tony and wish him a happy birthday. I don't really particularly have anything at all in common with Tony or any desire to hang out with him, but he's a tolerably decent guy, provided you have a sense of humor. It was also nice to briefly hang out with Derek again, and Emma's new apartment looks very cool and spacious.

Cons: Tony's girlfriend; "hilarious" drunken antics.

Tony's girlfriend: see below.

I do not have warm fuzzy feelings about the antics of drunks.

I have no desire to drink most liquors. Some few wines are okay, but I generally find alcohol's taste just gross. I've also often thought it's possible I'm slightly allergic to it, and here's why: I, like so many, am allergic to penicillin. Penicillin is made from mold, which you get from aging vegetable substances, right? Well, you also make liquor by aging vegetable substances. So even if they're not chemically similar, the process to make them kind of is, so it's not entirely impossible that that could be bad for me.

Anyway, I digress. The point is, I don't find substance abuse to make a party all on its own. I don't find substance abuse funny, either; I grew up around it and didn't appreciate the difficult situations it often put me in. I really don't like loud noises or having to shout to be heard. It's as simple as that.

3. Thoughts about Adventure Time TG and the bizarre fandom TG popularity.

So I've been thinking it'd be cool to do a TG version of Jake's re-write of Finn's sad ballad in Incendium. I liked the ballad in both forms, and I like hearing John diMaggio sing, oddly. I'm not a dude, but there's a TG version of Adventure Time (as with every fandom, it seems, these days), and Cake could be singing to the Flame Prince instead. That'd be fun!

Then I got to thinking about the TG fandom trend. I see it pretty often these days. Almost every fandom-- no matter how oddly inappropriate-- will have TG fanart if you wait long enough. Sometimes I think it's really neat, sometimes it reminds me how sad I am that female protagonists aren't as common as they should be.

Mostly, however, it deeply disturbs me. TG fandom almost always ends with gender stereotyping (where the character's style of clothing and personality are changed because of the gender changing-- which is messed up and creepy), and "straight"-ifying any fan-favorite homosexual pairings. ALSO messed up and creepy. I mean, how sad is that? You decided you liked a pairing that likely isn't even canon, but only if you "fix" the gender of one character so it's heterosexual and frequently gender normative (you know, demeaning girl-in-skirt, boy-in-pants, girl-is-meek, boy-is-aggressive nonsense)? Dude. Not cool.

Which brings me to point 4!

4. How to make a bad first impression and convince me that yes, Tony really is too good for you, and I only sort of like Tony

Tony's girlfriend got three strikes from the moment I first met her upon arrival. I'd only heard bad things, and they are now substantiated:

-Is still sick and coughing all over everything. Insists we play a card game in close quarters, coughs on anyone within six feet, and her hands, which she then touches other people with during the card game while they're still wet with phlegm (EW)

-Grumble about how she doesn't like her boyfriend right now at him on his birthday, then say 'we can have sex later, if I'm drunk enough' (That is the most horrible thing you could possibly say to someone you are IN A SEXUAL RELATIONSHIP WITH. 'I dislike you so much that I would rather be in a drunken stupor than have sex with you on your birthday. Once I'm in it, though, feel free.')

-Immediately jump in to a polite conversation I initiated about whether Emma is amused by men macking other men, and decry that all women who think such things are attractive have a problem and are mentally messed up. (Hey, you know what? I'm polyamorous, bisexual, and I think gay men and women have a right to be together, and I think it's beautiful when they are. I can find it attractive when people love each other, regardless of what gender they are. And more importantly? I wasn't talking to you!)

Result: I left the party. Sorry, Emma, but it was getting late anyway.

Bed! but first...

Dear Ontogenesis, my darling pal:

I never realized how incredible a gift was your in-character, appropriate, well-written fanfic of DS9 crossed over with Tsubasa: Reservoir Chronicle. Now I know that that story was a jewel so rare and precious, adventurers would die many deaths to seek it out.

I just need to tell you retroactively, again, that I really really love you for writing that those years ago, because I can think back on it and still smile, knowing that it exists, despite all the terrible, terrible DS9 fanfiction by other people I'm discovering now.

Absolutely needed to say this. Because WOW. I was lucky you wrote that!

Other notes: Today was all right; Ron has the flu so no workouts; instead I showed Dusty some DS9, Danny and I went grocery shopping and also got a new teapot, and then Danny and I watched some Real Adventures of Johnny Quest, and the extraordinarily long movie Merlin, starring Sam Neill.

It was pretty decent, despite being hilariously cheesy at times! But oh my goodness, very long.
