Ugh

Yesterday, the air conditioning was being wonky. The maintenance guy replaced our thermostat, which was faulty, hoping that would fix it. For a while, it was fine. Sometime around four in the morning, though, it broke, and we woke up to the oven of our apartment. I have fans in the living room and the bedroom, plus the ceiling fan in the dining room, and Danny has one in the computer room. That leaves the bathrooms (which do have fans, though not quite of the same function) and the kitchen, but with all the fans on, it's at least workable in here.

I've taken the day off work so I can be here while the maintenance guy fixes things up. He's working on the roof now, which is awesome, but it's 85F in here, which is not so awesome. (Though I guess it's not 100; I feel bad for the maintenance guy having to be on the roof in this weather.)

I also discovered that the ants Danny mentioned are trying to make a friggin' colony out of his bathroom sink. After killing all the ones I could spot with toilet paper and flushing them, I tried to cover up the spot that they seem to be coming from with boric acid. (There was some right next to it, and several of them had gotten into it, but another hole was present to the right and they were coming from there, it seemed.) No idea if this has solved the problem, but ugh. I feel all crawly now. I don't think they're ants but I'm not sure what they are; tiny black bugs that are way excited about the bathroom sink. They're nowhere else in the apartment- I looked- so I have to conclude they like the water, and that's why they're here. Some online sources suggest that they might be living in the organic matter buildup in the pipes and drains, so I'm thinking it might be good to get some Draino.

This thoroughly boring update brought to you by exhaustion. The upside to taking today off is I can get in some extra work on my animation project and on prepping my papers for the upcoming interview, at least.

The maintenance guy fixed the A/C by about 12:30, and the temperature is back where I want. When he came in to let me know he'd finished, I was very grateful and asked (for a second time-- when he showed up yesterday I had asked him, too) if he wanted water. Please! he agreed, and gulped down a glass.

I love you, Maintenance Guy. Thank you for believing us that there's a problem, this time and fixing it! (Yesterday there was a second maintenance guy, and they both were doing the usual I'm a Technician On-Site and I Really Hope This Isn't Broken thing where they basically tried to imply that Danny had overreacted about the heat, and that it wasn't really broken. I understand where they're coming from-- they're working a pretty shitty job-- but it's still frustrating to be talked down to like that, and nobody enjoys having their capacity for observation cast into doubt without substantial justification.)
