potentially radical and unpopular thoughts that I have rather often.
Here is a list of things I think I'd like to write books or stories about in the future, but that at least in the USA, I think would be frowned upon.
1. Maybe it's better not to have children or propagate life because it's unfair to force people to live a life that is haunted at every corner by the imminence, permanence and certainty of death. Maybe!
2. Maybe instead all life is the building blocks of the universe, and the universe and time are all a memory, we are all connected, and when it's all black cold nothing with the kinds of life forms that can live in black cold nothing, the collective yearning for something more will spur another universe. (Maybe that's how this one came to be in the first place.)
3. Maybe it wouldn't be so bad if capitalism was abandoned, since it causes a large amount of our problems. Yes, I think socialism is actually a good thing. Yes, I think religion is frequently a bad thing. Yes, I think it's hard for people who are privileged and don't like change to give up privilege and accept change. Yes, I think that the government has responsibility to govern based on what's actually good for the people it governs, not based on the personal agendas of the people who get elected to office (as in the case of the USA right now) or take office (as in many cases worldwide and historically). Maybe it would be pretty damn good if government was knocked away and put back in from the ground up, starting with some basic truths: All sentient creatures are deserving of rights, respect, and the ability to speak freely and to live their lives in as happy and peaceful a manner as possible. That covers all possibilities (us acknowledging the possible sentience of other animals; aliens; us evolving to non-humans). Doesn't that sound good?
In other news, I did get some feedback from artist buddy about the whys of her needing to drop the collaboration, which was good. Every little bit helps, and after how bad yesterday was, my confidence had taken a pretty big hit.
I talked to both of my parents on the phone for a long while. I talked to dad about how there's a raffle to get tickets to space for one of the companies working on that. He laughed and asked if I was buying a ticket, and I demurred, admitting that space travel as it currently exists terrifies me. He also said, of the canceled collaboration, why not show it to your aunt? She's an artist; she knows artists. Maybe you could work something out. I know she'd probably enjoy it.
So I did, and after much demurring and 'Well, I'm not really a cartoonist' she said I could send her the script, anyway, and she'd look at it. The emails have been kind of funny, but mostly wonderful. Here they are, with identifiers removed:
Dev: Hi! Okay, I had set this up as three documents. One described the locations, one described the characters, and one was the script. In this email is just the script; if you need the others, then let me know! I figured you could just read this and get a feel for whether you'd like to give it a shot or not!
Aunt: Okay...I will give it a read. I can't promise you anything, but I will play with it a little and see if I can do this. Who knows... might be fun! I will get back to you.
[A couple of hours later]
Aunt: Okay, I just finished reading the script. Sounds like an interesting story...like what happens next?? Which is what you want in a story. So, okay, send me the other documents and I will work up some drawings and we shall see if I can do this or not.
Dev: That's great! Thanks, Aunt ____. The other two documents are pasted below!
Aunt: All I can say is Holy Cow!!! I will give it a try. You have certainly put a lot of thought into this!!
I don't know if she'll be willing to keep trying it out with me, but I feel oddly happy about it. It's something, in the midst of all this nervousness. And that's good.
