This succinctly says everything that's been boiling under my skin lately.
Here's the thing about men's rights: We're on the same side.
This, like Skye's recent (friendslocked) post which skillfully deconstructed the importance of supporting gay marriage, really hits the nail on the head, in my opinion.
Skye's post actually shamed me a little bit, because I know sometimes in the past, I've been a little frustrated that people are willing to fight for the rights of gay couples to marry, but they will make efforts to silence the complaints of women or other minorities who demand equal rights. The two big things I was forgetting were a) actually, yeah, all the rest of us can get married. Pretty bonkers not to fight for those rights for gays/trans/everyone else, isn't it? and b) that my own concerns with the institution of marriage-- my own COMPLAINTS about marriage-- would be solved by legalizing gay marriage.
I'll only quote one line of Skye's post because it was friends-only and I don't want to disrespect his wishes, but this pretty much covers it all:
Gay marriage is a threat to traditional marriage because:
Gay marriage is an admission that marriage, as recognized by the government, is a union of equals and not a declaration of chattel rights by a man over a woman.
So, I am embarrassed to admit that while I cared before, I wasn't really giving it as much support as I should, especially since so many of my friends are gay and I love them very much. And on a related note, my parents, who I know support gay marriage, are celebrating their anniversary today. Or if they aren't, they should be. I'll call them to let them know they ought to.
