Cool, cool, cool! And then not so cool.
Wednesday, May 9th, 2012 11:20 amHere are today's topics of thought:
GoT- The latest episode was pretty good despite the near-rape scene. (Man, I have to write sentences like that way more often than makes sense.)
I never thought I'd like Bran so much in the show; I don't like the concept of losing oneself to what felt like fever dreams to me, let alone to do so intentionally. But this episode showcased some great Bran! I'm sick of seeing women only capable of doing things by seduction, but at least it was over quickly. I still like wildling girl. (Anyone who hates me for failing to put all the names, I do apologize. I have trouble remembering them since I haven't read past the first book.)
I loved how stylishly the Tywin and Arya stuff happened. That's just been the highlight of every episode for me, because Tywin has been pretty classy and evil in the way you WANT a terrifying supervillain to be. There's some truth in the idea that the scariest guy can afford to look nice sometimes.
Sansa's near rape had me pretty irate, but not because the scene was done unconvincingly or too graphically or anything. I actually thought it was handled pretty well, I just-- you know, I'm really sick of rape scenes or almost-rape scenes. Really sick of them. So it still made me burn with anger and bad feelings.
It is still ridiculously satisfying to watch Tyrion punch Joffrey, though I suspect that's going to have some consequences.
I guess the Danaerys scenes were a little different from the book, but having not read the relevant parts, it worked for me. Everyone is playing with fire, and it does feel like things are going to go totally crazy soon.
Adventure Time- OH DANG OH DANG OH DANG THE SNAIL IS BACK oh my glob you guys, seriously, for real. Man why haven't people learned that Jake is always right yet, pfft.
Captain America- We got and watched Captain America, and it was really good! I regret refusing to do so before, but I'm glad to have seen it now. The biggest problem the movie had (and I think we'll see a lot of this in movies from the 3D craze) is that the CGI budget quickly lost focus as the movie went on, until we hit a point where entire backgrounds looked like bad greenscreen because...well, the money had gone elsewhere. As someone who never partakes of the 3D stuff, I have to admit I'm a little bothered that that's affecting my movie watching at home. And changing isn't really an option: 3D gives us headaches. So no!
The Who- So long story short, I forgot to put my .mp3 player back in my bag today, or something. Luckily, I have some music on the computer here at work from when my boss was trading some of his favorite albums for mine. This includes some of The Who and I thought, I'm pretty much a chump about the Who, so sure, I should listen to them so I know more than Behind Blue Eyes.
One of the songs on here is Man in a Purple Dress, and boy. The derogatory way men in drag are portrayed here really bugs me. I know the song is meant to be about how religious officials have no more right or power than people who act out of the knowledge of what is good in their heart, but to accomplish that, Townsend is putting down "drag queens" and, by extension I'm sure, gay men in general, equating them with ridiculousness, fakeness, and evil ambition. What makes this even worse is, I looked it up to figure out what the deal was, and he apparently wrote this (along with two others) immediately after watching Passion of the Christ, and the message I'm getting isn't that he was offended by the making of the movie or the gratuitous, senseless torture porn-- the movie worked for him, and made him really mad at the jerky ol' religious officials who would dare condemn Jesus to death.
As a fan of Jesus Christ: Superstar, and someone who thinks crossdressing should be allowed and encouraged, not shied away from and scorned-- sorry folks, I like wearing pants and I'm not stopping-- I have to admit it makes me a lot less interested in rectifying my lack of knowledge with regard to The Who. I think I have to put up with enough sexist, racist, homophobic nonsense with people I actually know, I don't want to listen to music about it. Kinda the same deal as how I don't want to listen to songs about abusive relationships.
Edit: Okay, yeah, I can't really listen to the Who at all, can I. Sigh.
