"Vitalberry"

This is a diatribe, but I am genuinely puzzled by this: I bought blueberries at the grocery store on Saturday since they were on sale and I am somewhat fond of them. However, upon closer inspection as I finish them off this morning, I've discovered that the little pint box says "vitalberry", with "blueberries/bleuets" underneath as a subscript. These are unusually tart blueberries, which is something I've enjoyed about them, so I'm now wondering if they might be some special kind of blueberry that is made to be tart or something. It could just be a marketing ploy. I will have to look it up. Edit: And just for the record, I mean that they're tart even after becoming ripe, not that they're unripe-tart!

Regrettably, my submission to Stone Telling was rejected; they were very nice and encouraging about future submissions to them, though, which was heartening.

D&D was pretty awesome last night. I'm behind on the summary thing, so I'll need to catch up at some point. It's just, when we could be playing Civ V, Danny and I tend to do something like that, or cook bread or something, you know, and then the summaries get put off and put off. It's hard to be as vigilant about it as I was with the Gwenn game, because it's so much easier to socialize and have fun in the current, smaller apartment.

Chicken tacos?!

Oh boy oh boy oh boy! Whataburger has CHICKEN TACOS now apparently! I was bemoaning the fact that I didn't really want a burger, but all the food places near me are either extremely expensive or burger-related (yes yes, I didn't have time to pack a lunch this morning; bad me, bad). I decided to go to Whataburger and discovered upon arriving that lo! Behold! They now have a chicken soft taco with grilled onions and poblano peppers!

It is delicious! And totally not burgery, which is what I was craving. Yay!

Also, D&D occurs this fine evening. I am looking forward to it!

DELICIOUS

I just had Jack-in-the-Box tacos for the first time ever and they're amazing. They are like crack. I want more already and I'm not even hungry!

In less delicious news, sometimes things like this happen:

Fandom: I want this m/m or f/f couple to have a baby! You can have them be transgendered, or do mpreg/immaculate conception, lol, I don't care!
Dev: Adoption exists! What the heck!

or this:

Fandom: Oo, best idea! Let's have X character in Y crossover to a thing you've never heard of!
Dev: Can there be another fandom for crossovers or something? I don't care about Y fandom and you are GETTING YOUR CONAN IN MY LUPIN

or this:

Fandom: Lol it's better when X character is a girl because he's so girly anyway!
Dev: YOU ARE MISSING THE POINT
Fandom: Ok um then how about turning that butch girl into a dude? I bet then she'd be hot!
Dev: *sob*

Have revived Lebowski-icon because it is appropriate, though I couldn't quite make it perfect using the upload-image/crop feature. I'll fix it when I get home, perhaps!

But really, seriously, those tacos were amazing.

I hadn't realized that Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus didn't get an Oscar, and I should have known-- that was the year of Avatar, wasn't it? --but how depressing. )

Honeyed oats

Honey oat bread!

This is what Danny made when I said before workouts "but I did not buy bread from the store, because you promised we would make bread!"

Not just any bread but delicious honey oat bread! It is ridiculously awesome.

Lately we've been cooking a lot more because we both see the cost effectiveness of it, and honestly it turns out we both like cooking. I find it more enjoyable when I'm not doing it alone, and hope Danny enjoys that too, as it would mean we will both continue with the cooking. As a result, we have needed to acquire things we'd previously gone without-- like smaller mixing bowls and ingredients that combine to make delicious things. And a big old cutting board. The one I got is made of bamboo, which smells weird and milky like bamboo shoots do when they are fresh-cut. I'm hoping that smell will fade with time, because it's a swanky cutting board, otherwise, and well worth the purchase. Being big enough to make bread on, it may significantly cut down on Danny having to sterilize the counter every time he makes things, which I'd like to do since I like it very much when he makes things and see every reason to make the process easier for us both.

The only downside is, Danny doesn't like the bread too much since it tastes a trifle more like wheat bread than it might've without the oats, so we'll just have to make more bread in the future. No hardship there!

Annoyed about TOR. )

Anyway. Time for sleeps.

So, with encouragement from Danny and, additionally, his assistance in determining and confirming the extent of what I'll need to change that was D&D specific to the original story, I'm going to make a project of turning the Tiamat-centric D&D game into a comic. Tiamat will be more like her mythological self- a naga- and her people will consequently be nagas, as well. I feel like that ties in well with the stones of power, too.

Going to get to work on this as soon as I finish cooking dinner tonight (on the menu: Quinoa and fajitas!), starting with a little supplement for what races the story has, a supplement about the geography, and character studies of the main cast. Then I'll get to storyboarding the intro, and try to figure out what sort of length this project will have. I'm totally jazzed! I already have partially finalized character designs for most of these characters (some more than others), and the story is complete. The only hard part will be deciding whether to embellish certain elements along the way. There's something kind of neat about keeping the original characters as intact as possible, too. If it weren't for the fear of infringing on copyright, I'd keep the D&D specific stuff the same, but in the interest of making sure not to do so, I'm willing to change the details that didn't come straight from us.

I do have a question for those of you who follow my journal: if I posted updates for this project here, would that drive you totally bonkers, or would that be neat / nice / otherwise dandy? I'm debating the merit of updating at a personal site AND here, or just at a site devoted to the comic.

The only way I see myself actually successfully doing this is if I learn more about anatomy, though, so practice sketches to get a feel for that will be filling my head soon.

Call to Cookies

Everyone, hold on a second.

I need you to go buy Girl Scout cookies. I know, I know-- you were going to do it anyway. Those cookies are super delicious.

Is this about Taylor of CA, who claims to be a girl-scout and has problems with the GSUSA organization allowing transgendered children to partake in the organization's activities and club?

It is, a little. I disagree fundamentally with the idea of putting such stock in gender that it can cripple your ability to do something because you feel like to do so you must be male or female. I strongly advocate gender equality and gender blindness. The arguments put forth by this so-called girl scout (evidently part of an organization called "Honest Girl Scouts", designed to repress girls even more than they already are by denying them sex education, in the interest of "purity"-- how Victorian) include complaints that she feels 'unsafe' knowing that the GSUSA may allow transgendered individuals to join the group.

Why should women feel unsafe around men? That only further empowers men and de-powers women.

Why should a little girl be treated differently just because of her biological origin? If she chooses to be a girl, that is what she is.

I find arguments like this wildly offensive; I am a woman, and I am not threatened by the presence of men, transgendered men OR women, or women. Furthermore, the implication that there is an inherent sexual perversion associated with transgendering is draconian, and needs to stop.

Is it worth explaining why sex-shaming girls of any type is harmful to women? It seems to me like the reasons are obvious. Girls should be free to express themselves sexually and so should boys. The act of sex is not inherently dirty, and it is pursued for mutual pleasure between consenting adults. It should be conducted cautiously to ensure neither party is hurt, and it should be conducted safely to ensure that neither party is given unwanted complications, such as tearing/bleeding, sexually transmitted infections, or unplanned pregnancy. The means by which you accomplish this is entirely up to the participants. Condoms and abstinence are equally acceptable forms of preventing STI transfer, pain, or childbirth.

What really irritates me is the misguided notion that purity is separate from gender identity, or sexual exploration. A woman who enjoys sex is no less pure than a woman who has never had sex. Purity is determined by personality and conduct, not by sexual proclivities or gender.

So please, buy lots of Girl Scout cookies, because they are delicious. And maybe, possibly, also because you think transgendered kids probably get enough flak already, and don't deserve to be singled out and bullied.

Better

Sleep truly heals most ills. At least ills of the nature I had. (And no particularly noteworthy weird behavior that made it hard to sleep! Though the cat kept licking my elbow, which made it very difficult to actually sleep while being unfairly cute.)

So what's one thing you recently discovered that makes everything seem SUPER AWESOME? For me, it is strawberry-flavored applesauce. Stuff's cheap, tastes like strawberries and apples, and makes an excellent addition to my usual breakfast of a banana.
